TASTING :: JANUARY 11, 2015

Count Karolyi Gruner Veltliner 2013

Hungary – $11.65

Count on great acidity, green leaf-inflected orchard fruit, and a subtle spicy note creeping on the fruit. Lime rind, mint, orchard fruit, wet stones, and white pepper. Crisp acidity with citrus, subtle spearmint, and round juicy pear and apple taste.

Terrapura Carmenere Colchagua Valley 2011

Chile – $10.15

This is a fairly lean and acidic wine, with dry cranberry and herb aromas. The palate is drying and wiry, with a peppery, herbal red-fruit flavor, plus a bit of rubber on the finish.

Valckenberg Dornfelder Rheinhessen 2013

Germany – $12.75

A smooth, medium-bodied, lightly sweet red with notes of ripe cherries and black currants bursting on the palate, followed by a distinctive vanilla note on the velvety finish.

Araldica Barbera d’Asti Albera DOCG Piedmonte 2012

Italy – $13.05

Ruby red with purple highlights. Elegant fruit aromas of cherries and plums with an enticing warm, spiced, smoky aroma. Berry flavors paired with spiced and sapid notes.

Fattoria del Cerro Manero Rosso Di Toscana 2010

Italy – $13.65

Intense fruity bouquet of wild berries, cherry and plum, with undertones of spices and vanilla. On the palate it is full bodied, with soft tannins and a long savory finish.

Orin Swift Department 66 Grenache VDP des Cotes Catalanes 2011

France – $37.25

Ink black in color with a shade of crimson on the band, the wine suggests a powerful tasting experience. Dar, dried fruit, cocoa, spring flowers, and Mediterranean herb aromas are framed by seasoned French oak resulting in stunning aromatics. The entry is rich with exotic spice notes leading to mouth filling flavors of blackberry, licorice, blueberry ham, and espresso. The finish has a velvety texture that lingers indefinitely with enough minerality to remind you of this special region.
